Long Tomatoes
The long tomato, often also known as San Marzano tomato or pear tomato, is a variety of tomato characterized by its elongated and thin shape. This variety is particularly appreciated for its rich and concentrated taste and for its dense and fleshy pulp with few seeds.
Long tomatoes have smooth skin and a deep red hue. They are known for their balance of sweetness and acidity, which makes them excellent for the preparation of sauces, purees and preserves. Their dense consistency and low amount of water make them ideal for cooking, as they tend to shrink less than other tomato varieties and maintain a rich and robust consistency.
San Marzano tomato, in particular, is a famous variety originating from the Campania region in Italy. These tomatoes are often considered one of the best types of tomato to make tomato sauce, thanks to their distinctive flavor and ideal texture.
From a nutritional point of view, long tomatoes offer similar benefits to other tomato varieties, being a good source of vitamin C, potassium, B vitamins and antioxidants, in particular lycopene.
Both for domestic and commercial use, long tomatoes are highly valued for their versatility in cooking, especially in the preparation of traditional Italian dishes such as sauces and pizzas.
